Different Directions (pt.6)

Nottingham Castle. Courtyard. Before dawn.
(The gang sneak inside the castle to rescue Roy.)

Dungeon door.
(Will has successfully chiselled two blocks out of the door. He pushes the upper one through the door, blows away the shavings, peers through the hole, then reaches inside and finds the hinge. He pulls it out, holding it up to the gang, then steps aside for Little John, who shoves a shoulder into the door and knocks it down. Robin goes downstairs first, stepping over the door, followed by Much, Little John and Will. They creep past empty cells.)

(They successfully free Roy but not without alerting the Sheriff, Gisborne and the guards. There is a huge fight which starts out in the dungeons and eventually makes it way back outside to the courtyard. The gang are on the losing end when suddenly Annie grabs Gisborne’s hair and holds a knife to his throat.)
Annie: (Roars:) “Murderers! I will kill you!”
(Everybody turns to look at her.)
Gisborne: “Annie!”
Annie: “Do not move! You left him in the woods! You said he would be safe! You left him to die! Our son! Our baby!”

Sheriff: “Gisborne.” (Tuts)
(Gisborne knocks Annie’s knife away, then back slaps her with all his might, knocking her to the floor. Robin takes advantageof the distraction and lunges into the guard on his left, pulling free of the other’s grasp, and Roy does the same. Robin throws an elbow into the man to his right, then turns, grabs the left arm of the first guard about to punch him, and kicks him in the groin. The guard doubles over. Will pushes his lone guard into the wall, grabbing theman’s sword as Allan runs between them to Annie’s aid. After Allan passes, Will strikes twice with the sword. Gisborne is trying to pin Annie to the floor when Allan runs up and shoves him into the wall and then kicks him in the face. Allan pulls Annie to her feet and leads her away from the fight. Little John twists his body to hit a guard with the staff, then frees an arm and spins the staff round to knock back the second, then drives the butt of his staff into the first. Robin wrenches his bow away from his fallen guard as he parries a blow from one soldier with his sword, then turns, swinging, and quickly brings his sword up to parry a thrust from another behind him as he turns to face the first again.)
Sheriff: “Locksley! (Everybody looks back at the Sheriff as Much and Will open the gate.) Why so much haste, my friend? (Robin pulls out an arrow and takes a few steps forward as he nocks it.) Sorry to ruin your day, but if you leave, he gets it. (to Roy:) This is our old friend, the dilemma, calling.”
(Robin draws his bow at the Sheriff.)
Much: “Master, you cannot give yourself up every five minutes!”
Roy: “Robin, no!”
Sheriff: (Waving the dagger at him:) “Robin, yes.”
Robin: “Let him go… or we all die here today.”
(Roy throws his head back into the Sheriff ’s jaw, grabs the grabs the Sheriff ’s arm and spins out of his grip.)
Roy: “Run! (Rips the tag out from round his neck.) For the baby!”
(Throws the tag to Little John. Little John catches the tag as Roy throws his back against the main doors. Several guards advance on him and attack.)
Roy: “My name is Royston White! (Roy crumples to the ground shouting his mantra as the guards continue to hack at him.) I fight for Robin Hood and King Richard!” (The guards pull their swords from Roy’s body and stab again
as Robin stands staring. Little John pulls at him as the soldiers start to chase after them.)

Little John: “Robin! Robin, come on!”
(They all run out the gate. The guards chase them into the marketplace, then stop. The gang continue to run through the town.)

Sherwood Forest. The next morning.
(A man drives the trap down a forest path as Marian follows on her white horse. Robin with his hood up, the gang, and Annie with Seth come out of the trees to meet them. Robin heads straight for Marian. Marian smiles at Annie, who glances at Marian, then the baby, and back at Marian.)
Annie: “Thank you, my lady.”
Marian: “Lady Glasson is a good mistress. You will be well looked after… and Seth, too.”
Annie: (Smiles at the others.) “And you, too. Thank you. From me, but… especially from… “ (looks down at Seth.)
Marian: “Go. You have a long journey.”
(Annie nods at Marian. The trap driver clicks to the horses and sets off with the gang and Marian watching. Marian looks down at Robin, who is watching her with a hopeful look.)

image

Robin: “Your hair. Was the sheriff behind this?”
Marian: (ruefully) “Lets just say I’d have preferred that spanking.”
Robin: “Marian, I’m sorry this happened to you.”
Marian: “I’m not. It was a nuisance to wash. Besides it has only strengthened my resolve to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. Perhaps just in more subtler ways for the time being.”
Robin: “My men and I don’t do subtle.”
Marian: (smiling) “Or washing for that matter.”
Robin: (laughing) “As you said, always different directions.”
(Marian stares at him. Robin glances aside, realising her earlier words are right, then Marian turns the horse around and leaves. Robin watches her go, but the others are watching Annie.)
Much: (a bit sadly:) “I have to say I’m not going to miss that baby.
Will: (With sadness in his eyes:) “Me neither. (Watches the cart go round the bend.) Peace.”
(Will turns to go back into the forest, revealing Allan behind him.)
Allan: (Closing his eyes, desperately:) “Sleeeep!”
(Allan and Much follow Will. Robin solemnly watches the trap fade into the trees, then turns to watch Marian disappearing over the rise. He dejectedly follows his gang.)

Another type of Punishment..(pt.5)

image

 Knighton Hall. Exterior.
(Marian is driving home when Edward comes out of the house.
Marian stops the trap. Edward shakes his head slowly as
Gisborne steps out behind him. She peers around her father’s shoulder and sees the Sheriff walk past the door
way.)
Marian: “Um… well….Oh shit."

image

Main room.
(The Sheriff sits at the table. Gisborne leans against the wall behind him. Marian stands facing the Sheriff, her back to a post. Edward stands nearby.)
Sheriff: "Rumors abound. The pestilence is over.”
Marian: “It is over.”
Sheriff: “Oh, no, my dear, that was between you and me, and the council of nobles. Y’see, now we have a problem. Either I say you were wrong, you made a mistake, and leave the quarantine in place…”
Marian: “I was not wrong.”
Sheriff: “…or, or I say you were right, lift the quarantine, let the lay-abouts live, and then look for somewhere else to house my garrison.”
Marian: “Then say I was right.”
Sheriff: “No, you see, there’s always a catch. In politics there’s always a deal. If I were to say that you were right, then I would lose face. Well, that can’t happen, hmm? We must have authority. No. I’d have to punish you…for your outspokenness." (He gets up to leave)
Marian: "Punish me?”

image

Sheriff: “I do not listen to suggestions that you are consorting with Robin Hood. That would be unforgivable.”
Marian: “What punishment?”
Sheriff: “Oh, don’t worry, nothing personal. Just politics. Would have to hurt, though.”
Marian: “What punishment?!" (Sheriff and Gisborne exit; her father looks worriedly at her)
Marian: "What is it with men trying to punish me?!”
Nottingham Castle. Courtyard. Late afternoon.
(The gallows platform, with one noose ready, has been set up in
the centre of the courtyard.
The main doors open and thunder rumbles in the distance as
Marian steps out bravely in a light grey sack dress with a
rope belt. Her hair is loose and her hands are tied behind
her back. She is escorted down the steps by two guards as
the Sheriff and Gisborne stand at the top. Edward stands
halfway down, watching as Marian is led to the platform.)
Sheriff: “We cannot have challenges to our authority. The law applies to everybody, even the privileged. (Points to Marian, nods to guard who takes her hair and begins to cut it; she begins to cry) Ah, wasted beauty, humiliation, sometimes so much better than execution.”

Injuries & Arguments (pt.4)

image

Marian: “That is a waste of arrows.”
Robin: “No." (Chuckles)
Marian: "You could simply throw the food.”
Robin: “I could, but where would be the fun in that?
(Arrow hits Robin in the arm) Ah!”
Marian: “Robin!" (They flee to a random villager’s home)
Marian: "Do you know me?" (Woman bows)
Woman: "Lady Marian.”
Marian: “No. You have not seen me, understand?”
Woman: “As you wish.”
Marian: “Can you help me?”
(She looks at Robin on horse with baby, nods, goes inside)

image

(Inside house, Marian is fingering a needle and thread)
Marian: “This needle is thick and blunt. Are you prepared?”
Robin: “Hmm, it’s the way you sell it.”
Marian: “You’ll need to take off your shirt." (He obeys)
Robin: "So, cmon then, your turn." (Marian says nothing..then jabs Robin in the arm with the needle)
Robin: "Ow! I was joking!”
Marian: “That was for telling your ‘merry men’ about private matters.”
Robin: “Ah, fair enough.”

image

Robin: “So, you never told me, when I was in the Holy Land, you must’ve had suitors. (She pokes needle in) Ah!”
Marian: “I must have?”
Robin: “Well, it is surprising you are not married.”
Marian: “It is. And yet, when one considers that marriage requires a man, perhaps not. (He chuckles) Is sex all you think about?”
Robin: “It’s funny how that happens once you’ve had it.”
Marian: “Oh really?" (She tugs on the thread)

image

Robin: "Ow! That’s enough Marian.”
Marian: “And what are you going to do, spank me again? Tell your gang about it?”
Robin: “I might! Marian, why is it everything you say to me sounds like a criticism?”
Marian: “I do not know. I suppose these are the lives we have chosen. Always different directions.“
Robin: "And yours is the better direction?”
Marian: “I work within the system, it is the only way.”
Robin: “Okay, so today at Clun…”
Marian: “That was different! It was an emergency!”
Robin: “And you were wonderful. You were bold and…I wish there were more emergencies.”
Marian: “Well, forgive me for being careful, but so far nobody has had their tongue cut out because of me!”
(She storms out)

Feeding the Villagers (pt.3)

image

Gisborne: “Marian are you sure about this?‘
Marian: “These people must be fed or they will die Sir Guy, despite what the Sheriff thinks.”
Gisborne: “You know if you are caught I cannot help you. The Sheriff gives me position and power that I..”
Marian: “I know Sir Guy, I can’t ask you to risk being seen defying him. Thank you for donating all this food for the cause." (Climbing back upon his horse)
Gisborne: "You’re welcome M’lady, just be careful." (He leaves)

image

(Watching Sir Guy ride off she turns back around to find…)
Marian: (Startled) "I wish you’d stop sneaking up on me like that!”
Robin: ‘That’s quite the load of food you have there, planning a picnic?“
Marian: ‘The village has been starved. The disease has gone, but the sheriff has not lifted the quarantine. He wants the village for accommodation.”
Robin: “So what’s your plan? Sweet talk the guards?”
Marian: “I can handle this thank you.”
Allan: “So what your saying is, ‘spanks but no spanks?”
(The gang burst out laughing, Will desperately trying to keep it in, Marian turns back slowly to glare at Robin.)
Marian: “You told them about that?!”
Robin: “Er…they guessed?”

image

(Determined not to be embarrassed twice in one day, Marian desperately tries to change the subject when she notices the baby in Robin’s arms for the first time.)
Marian: “Who’s child is that?”
Much: (quite pleased to be in on the joke for once) “We found him in the woods and were hoping to find a home for him in a nearby village.”
Marian: “Well if you all can stop sniggering like little school boys for five minutes and help me disperse this food to the villagers, maybe I can find a proper home for the child.”
(The gang all look to each other and sheepishly back to Marian.)
Gang: “Thank you Marian.”

Revelations (pt.2)

Nottingham Castle. Dungeons.
(Roy is sitting against the wall in a cell, having been roughed up by Gisborne, who is leaning over him. Roy repeats what Robin has taught him to say.)
Roy: “My name is Royston White. I fight for Robin Hood and King Richard.(Gisborne backslaps him hard.) My name is Royston White. I fight for Robin Hood and King Richard.”
(Gisborne grabs Roy’s shirt and punches his jaw.
The Sheriff opens the cell door.)

image

Sheriff: “It would be wise, would it not, to break his jaw after he’stalked, rather than before? (Steps to Gisborne.) Who is he?”
Gisborne: (Stands up, holding Roy’s tag.) “One of his associates. (Hands the tag to the Sheriff.) Raided my stables. Unfortunately for them, I had my horses shod with an identifying mark, which enabled me to track them down.”
Sheriff: (Bends down to Roy. Quietly:) “Talk.”
Roy: (Recites:) “My name is Royston White. I fight for Robin Hood and King Richard. I’ll say no more.”
Sheriff: (Whispers:) “Oh, you’ve said enough. You must have had a very difficult day.”
Roy: (Baffled, quietly:) “What?”
Sheriff: (Stands. to Gisborne:) “Let our friend rest.” (Turns to leave.)
Roy: “What’s happening here?”
Sheriff: (Turns back around and holds his finger near his lips.) “Shh.Shh-shh-shh-shh.” (The Sheriff motions to Gisborne with his finger and they both go to stand outside Roy’s cell. Gisborne turns around to stare at Roy a moment, then as he turns to leave, Annie approaches with a tray.)
Annie: (to Gisborne:) “You are back quickly. (Gisborne starts to leave.) Did… did he cry?”
(Roy perks up at the strange question. Gisborne glances at Roy, then leaves without a word. Annie continues on to Roy’s cell with the tray. Roy scrambles to the door as Annie kneels, puts the tray down on the floor and hands him a cup
through the bars.)
Roy: “What’s your name?”
Annie: “Annie.”
Roy: “Why did you smile at him, Annie?”
Annie: “He has another side. A side he cannot show.” (Stands with the tray.)
Roy: “You’re wrong.”
Annie: “Be careful. (Squats down.) If I had position, I would be his wife.”
Roy: “He tell you that, did he?”
Annie: “I am the mother of his child.”
Roy: “What’s your baby called?”
Annie: “None of your business. (She bends down to pick up the tray and stands. Roy stares at her.) Seth.” (Turns to leave.)
Roy: “He’s a few weeks old, got a velvet shawl?”
Annie: (Turns back, smiling.) “Yes. How…? Did you meet him on the
way to the abbey?”
Roy: “Sort of…”

Nottingham Castle. Gisborne’s Office.
(Marian is sitting alone at Gisborne’s desk composing herself after her humiliation at the Council meeting when Guy returns. He is surprised but pleased to see her.)
Gisborne: “Lady Marian, I would have thought you would have left this place with your father by now.”
Marian: “Forgive me Sir Guy, I did not wish to be around anybody until I had gathered my thoughts.”
Gisborne: (smiling)  “Do you wish me to leave my own office?”
Marian: (Looking to him and returning the smile:) “No. Of course not that would make two of us being silly.”
(They both remain silent as Gisborne moves to perch himself on the desk beside where Marian is seated.)
Marian: (suddenly, frustratedly:)  “How can you work for a man that would knowingly allow people to die to make room for his Garrison?”
(Gisborne looks at her for a moment before answering.)
Gisborne: “The Sheriff and I do not always agree on matters of the people, but I do believe he is the type of man Nottingham needs to restore order.”
Marian: “By ordering their deaths?!”
Gisborne: “The Sheriff has merely extended the quarantine for another fortnight so that-”
Marian: (interrupting) “Those people will die if they are not fed and you’re going along with it. (accusingly) You’re an accomplice in all of this.”
(Gisborne stands and walks slowly towards the door. Marian nervously looks down at her hands, knowing she has gone too far with her outbursts.)
Gisborne: “You know M’lady, it really was a shame you could not come to Locksley Manor for my housewarming celebrations. There was quite the feast.
(Marian says nothing, still looking at her hands. Gisborne leans against the door and continues.) And, as fate would have it, there is far too much food left over and my pantry is practically overflowing. (Marian slowly raises her head to look over at Gisborne.) Perhaps M’lady would have a solution to my plight?”
(He raises an eyebrow, smirks and as Marian rewards him with a smile of her own, motions for her to follow him out of his office.)

Sheriff of Rottingham

image

Sherwood Forest.
(Roy is running with knobbler in hand through the forest, pursued by five of Gisborne’s men on horseback. After a while he reaches the agreed-upon ambush point and runs right at Robin, who is standing in the open. Roy winks at Robin ashe runs past him and Robin winks back, takes a deepbreath and waits. The horsemen gallop towards him. Much, waiting behind a thick tree trunk, readies the long stick in his hand. Will, with his broad axe out, and Allan, with a rough hewn bow, peek out from behind another tree on the other side. Robin, still standing in plain sight, holds his arms out, inviting the gullible men in. The horsemen maintain their pace, unaware that a thin strand of twine has been suspended between two trees. The first two riders run into it with their shoulders and are knocked off their horses. Much swings his stick and hits the helmet of a third, who pulls hard on the reins and the horse rears, knocking him off.The last two riders have stopped and Allan and Will each pull them off their horses. Beyond the ambush site, Roy stands in front of a startled, riderless horse, holding his arms out wide.)

image

Roy: “Whoa!”
(Gisborne gallops up last and watches the last of the scene.Much, Allan and Will each mount a horse and ride off. Robin sees Gisborne and turns his new horse to face him.)
Robin: (Triumphantly, impudently:) “Ha-ha!”
(Gisborne stares, but stays put as Robin and Roy follow the others into the forest. Then he smirks.)
Robin: “A good idea, Roy."
Roy: "Do we like it? I think we do!”
(Roy clasps fists with Allan.)
Allan: “What up, mate?”
(Will hugs him.)
Roy: “Fantastic.”
(Much goes over to Roy with his hand up, ready for him to slap.)
Much: “Roy! Roy! (Roy makes to slap Much’s hand, but he deliberately misses it, spins round and sticks his tongue out, laughing at Much, who is unamused.) Yeah, very funny.”
Roy: “Very funny! (to Robin:) Seeing it were my idea, I get |[points at the horse he rode] to keep the nag, right?"
(Irked that the others are having fun at his expense, Much steps away, after pulling off his cap. A baby fusses, but is not heard. Robin notices Much off by himself.)
Robin: "Much? (Takes several steps towards him.) Much, do not be so
easily wounded! (The baby fusses again, louder.)
Roy: "Oh, you have it then if you’re going to cry about it!”
Much: (Turns around.) “I am not crying!”
(The gang discovers a baby in the bushes and wonder where the mother is, but they don’t have long to worry as Gisborne and his men enter the clearing. The stolen horses shoes were marked with an X making it easy to be tracked. In the ensuing melee, Roy is captured and the gang are left holding the baby.)

Nottingham Castle. The Great Hall.Council of Nobles.

(Marian is in her usual place behind her father’s chair, leaning her hands on it.)
Sheriff: “Good news from the village of Clun. No new outbreaks for a fortnight. The pestilence, whatever it was, is gone.”
Marian: “Then we can lift the quarantine, feed the survivors."
(Sheriff chuckles)
Sheriff: "No, the people of Clun are a grubby people. The great unwashed. Low on taxes, high on moaning. Quarantine remains.”
Marian: “But how can they look after themselves if we will not allow them to leave their village? You cannot let healthy people die, it is barbaric. If it became known that we have delib…”

image

Sheriff: Interesting, hmm? This fire in your belly. Is this reason talking, or is it frustration…frustration at being how old now and still a maiden?
(Gisborne enters)

image

Guy: “My Lord we have captured one of the outlaws and have him in the dungeon.”
Sheriff: “Ah good work Gisborne, I’ll go see to our new ‘guest’. Oh and whilst you’re here Gisborne perhaps you can do the same for Marian here…Lord knows she needs a good seeing to." (he leaves)
Guy: "Lady Marian…is everything alright?”
Marian: (holding back a range of emotions)
“Yes Sir Guy, everything will be fine.”
