Happy New Year Hoodies

Or whatever Robin Hood fans are called.

Now that my series is over, if you would like to ask me questions or yell at me for what you didn’t like, please feel free.

Or, if you liked something let me know.

I did the best I could for all characters. Some things were controversial but ultimately I think it all worked.

Anyway, happy new year Hoodlums.

Epilogue – Four Days Later (pt.14)

Nottingham Castle. Bedchamber. Before Dawn.
(Meg is fussing with her hair as she sits in front of a mirror. Gisborne is stood watching her, slightly amused.)
Meg: (Annoyed, slams her brush down:) “This is ridiculous, the sun isn’t even up.”
Gisborne: “It soon will be if you don’t hurry yourself.”
Meg: (Gives Gisborne a look through the mirror and then turns to glare at him:) “You shouldn’t be going anywhere in your condition.”
Gisborne: “Meg, we’ve been through this, I have to be there.”
Meg: (Groans frustratedly:) “But why does it have to be so early!”
Gisborne: (Calmly:) “The King heads back to London today to reclaim the throne. The fact that he announced this late last night gave us little time to prepare.”
(Meg rises from her seated position and crosses the room to stand in front of Gisborne.)
Meg: “What I don’t understand is why it’s so important for you to be there. Surely they can appreciate the fact that you’re still healing.”
Gisborne: (Simply:) “It’s important to me that I attend.”
(Gisborne closes his eyes and staggers a little as Meg puts her arms out to steady him.)
Meg: “You still love her, don’t you?”
Gisborne: (Looks at her earnestly:) “I will always love her. She saved me when I had no hope of salvation. (Meg drops her head at these words. Tenderly, Gisborne brings his hand to her face and lifts her head so that she can look into his eyes.) But I am in love with you. (Meg smiles at this.) I’ll leave you to dress. I’ll be back soon.”
(Gisborne turns and exits the chamber. Meg watches him leave, reassured that Gisborne loves her yet still worried for his well-being.)

The Great Hall.
(People all dressed in their fineries are gathered in the Great Hall. Much stands with Will and Djaq shares a laugh with Allan as he tries to feel her pregnant belly. Eve smiles as she enters the room and walks over to join Much. King Richard, accompanied by a few crusaders is deep in conversation with Isabella.)
King Richard: “Are you sure that’s what you want? I have heard nothing but good things about your time as Sheriff. You’ve done a lot in such a short amount of time to help the people of Nottingham.”
Isabella: “Thank you, Sire. But yes I believe it’s time for me to step down.”
King Richard: “What will you do with yourself once you are no longer Sheriff?”
Isabella: “Oh I will keep myself busy. Overseeing the refurbishment of the castle is my top priority.”
King Richard: (Chuckling:) “Yes, Lady Marian advised me of the sacrifice you made to end the battle.”
Isabella: (Ruefully:) “It was a huge personal loss.”
King Richard: “I’m sure. (Leaning in conspiratorially:) The bath houses in the Holy land were to die for. (The King and Isabella share a knowing smile.) So, have you considered your successor?”
Isabella: “Yes, indeed I have. And if your majesty will excuse me, I would like to give them the news immediately.”
(The King nods as Isabella curtseys and leaves the Hall. The King’s eyes linger as he watches her go. This fact not lost on Allan who has been watching their conversation closely. Fortunately his attention is diverted by the arrival of Robin into the Great Hall.)
Robin: (Acknowledging the cheers and applause:) “Thank you, thank you my friends.”
Allan: “Robin. (Goes in for and receives a long hug from Robin. as they separate:) Never thought this day would happen, never in a million years.”
Robin: (Laughing:) “Well thanks, Allan.”
Djaq: (Smiling:) “So, where is she?”
Robin: “Ah. I’ve been told to lead you all to the spot we’ve chosen. She and Isabella will meet us there.”
Much: “Robin, you’re going to wear..that?”
Robin: (Smiling, spreading his arms wide.) “What else would Robin Hood wear, eh lads?”
Djaq: “It’s perfect.”
Will: “Yeah, and it’ll help Allan stick out less.”
Allan: “Oi, these clothes cost me a pretty penny not too long ago. Besides, it’s not the clothes that makes the man. It’s the man who makes the clothes, am I right ladies?”
(He winks at Eve and Djaq who both laugh good naturedly at him.)
Robin: (To the room:) “Ladies and Gentlemen. (Bowing slightly to the King.) Your majesty, if you would all please follow me, as we journey towards the venue.”
(Robin leads the way out of the Great Hall with all the gathered guests following behind.)

Bedchamber Door.
(Gisborne returns to the bedchamber and knocks on the door.)
Gisborne: “Meg, are you ready, the guests are leaving.”
Meg: (Inside the bedchamber:) “Is that Guy of Gisborne?
Gisborne: "Yes.”
Meg: “Guy of Gisborne who loves me?”
Gisborne: (Smirks:) “The same.”
Meg: “Come in then and see what I’ve chosen to wear.”
(Gisborne opens the door wide and is stunned by what he sees. Upon the bed lies Meg, naked as the day she was born and without a shred of modesty.)
Gisborne: “Meg..”
Meg: “Come closer, Guy. (She indicates the dress that lies in front of her on the bed.) My gown. Do you approve?”
Gisborne: (His mouth moving but no words forthcoming. He clears his throat:) “The gold is…divine. (Gisborne shakes himself from his stupor and closes the door. He turns back to Meg who smiles at him innocently.) You have not done as I have asked.”
Meg: (Looking down at herself:) “Have I not?”
Gisborne: “I asked you to-”
Meg: “Have I displeased you, do you find me ugly, Guy?”
Gisborne: “Any man who makes that claim shall lose his tongue.”
Meg: (Enjoying her power over him, lifts her foot:) “My foot. It is ungainly. (Looks back at it.) Too large perhaps.”
Gisborne: “Your foot is beautiful.”
Meg: “You cannot tell from there. Feel it.”
(She extends her foot out towards him. Gisborne takes a steadying breath and walks towards the temptress on the bed.)
Gisborne: (Taking Meg’s foot into his hand and caressing it:) “Is this a game?”
Meg: “It is a game of want and wanting. (Watching his hand she spreads her toes.) The toes are…splayed a little. (Gisborne’s eyes drop to them.) God has made better feet, I’m sure.”
Gisborne: “Not that I have found.”
Meg: (Laughing:) “You are a connoisseur of feet, now?”
Gisborne: (Smiling:) “Yes, and I have found none better.”
(He looks to her then back at the foot he is stroking.)
Meg: (Not taking her eyes from Gisborne:) “My calf. Is it elegant? (She gasps as Gisborne moves his hand slowly up to her calf.) Is it smooth?”
(Gisborne, mustering all of his will drops his hand from her leg.)
Gisborne: “What is this game, Meg?”
Meg: “I am seducing you, Guy of Gisborne.”
Gisborne: “But I am already yours.”
Meg: “Are you sure…(Sitting up and pulling Gisborne forward to lay alongside her.) that this body has the necessary charms to seduce a powerful a powerful man.”
Gisborne: “I am certain. You still see me as powerful then?”
Meg: “Very much so. And so will Nottingham, when you are healthy enough.”
Gisborne: (Confused:) “Nottingham?”
Meg: “Your sister visited me just moments ago. She has named you her successor. You are to be Sheriff of Nottingham. (She reaches up and brushes Gisbornes hair from his face.) You are to have everything you’ve ever wanted, Guy.”
Gisborne: “No. (Sincerely:) All that I have ever wanted is right here in this room.”
(He moves to kiss her but Meg pulls back slightly.)
Meg: “What about the wedding?”
Gisborne: “You were right, I’m still healing. (He leans forward and kisses her ravenously:) And I have no plans to leave this bed for a long time.”
(Meg smiles broadly and pulls him down for an impassioned embrace.)

image

Sherwood Forest. Just Before Sunrise.
(The guests are gathered around a small clearing in the forest. Isabella makes her way over to Allan, smiling.)
Allan: “Loving the dress. (Notices her teary eyes.) Are you alright?”
Isabella: (Nods, turns to look as the sun peeks over the hill.) “Here she comes.”
(She hooks her arm into the crook of Allan’s and holds his hand as Marian appears from the top of the hill. She’s wearing a silver dress with a light blue cloak, the hood partly over her head. She approaches Robin, winding through the trees, stealing glances at him. She smiles and chuckles slightly. Robin stands smiling at the bottom of the clearing alongside Much, his best man. Much glances back at Eve who is already crying and smiles at her.)

image

(Marian passes Djaq & Will. Djaq reaches out and takes Marian’s hand.)
Djaq: “You’re beautiful.”
Marian: (Smiling:) “Me? You’re glowing, Djaq.”
(Marian grins at Will who wraps his arm around the Saracen. Robin looks to Will who nods and pulls his tag from under his shirt, lifting it high and proudly. Little John stands watching, wearing his new scarf. Eleanor stands beside him and as Marian reaches Robin, rests her head on John’s shoulder.)
Archbishop: “I must say this is a
very unusual place for a wedding.”
Marian: “It’s perfect for us, we’ve
lived very unusual lives.”
Archbishop: (Chuckling:) “Yes I suppose that
is true. Shall we begin?”
(Robin and Marian look to each other as they
recite their vows.)
Robin: “I, Robin take you, Marian, to be my lawful
wedded wife. (Marian smiles.) To have and to hold… for better or for
worse… for richer… or for poorer…” (Much starts sobbing. Robin
bites his lip, trying not to cry himself.)

Marian: (Prompting:) “In
sickness…”
Robin: “In sickness or in health… (Sighs deeply.)… to
love and to cherish… till death do us part.” (Robin places the ring on
her finger.)
Marian: (Smiles proudly.) “I, Marian… take you, Robin of
Locksley… master of the bow, [Smiles.] champion of the poor and lord
of my heart, to be my lawful wedded husband. (Robin tries not to cry,
even as Much can’t control his emotions. Much’s crying has made Eve’s tears turn to silent laughter.)
I promise to love and to
cherish you, for better or for worse, from this day forward… as long
as we both shall live.”
(Much sobs. Marian chuckles, smiling brightly.)

image

Archbishop: “I now declare you Husband and Wife.”
Marian: “Kiss me.”

(Robin gives her a long kiss and Marian wraps her hands round the back
of his neck. Robin pulls back and they look into each others eyes and laugh, then embrace. Everyone gathered cheers.)
King Richard: “Well now, I must be leaving for London – have to let the rest of the Nation know I’m back and very much alive. I do have one thing left to say first. (Walking to Robin & Marian.) You have saved England and my throne. Is there anything I can do to repay you?”
Robin: “No, Your Majesty. For every man there is a purpose which he sets up in his life. Let yours be the doing of all good deeds.”
King Richard: (Nods:) “I shall, my friend. You and your men have accomplished great deeds in my name. Now it is my turn to take the spirit of Robin Hood with me to London. (Turning to the small gathered group.) We are Robin Hood.”
Little John: “Yes.”
Will/Djaq/Allan/Much/Little John/Marian/Robin: “We are Robin Hood!”
(Everyone cheers again.)
A Short Time Later.
(The Archbishop, King Richard and his crusaders bid farewell to the gang, turn towards the hill and head home. Finally, stood a little ways away from the others, Robin turns towards Marian. She smiles. Robin strokes her face.)
Robin:
"My wife.”
Marian: “Now and forever, my love. (Marian reaches out a hand to him. Robin takes it and holds her closely to him.) The greatest adventure is yet to come.”
(Marian smiles as Robin strokes her face. Robin kisses her deeply and Marian wraps her arms around him. Robin picks her up and swings her round in circles as Marian laughs, overjoyed.)

Last Man Standing (pt.13)

image

Nottingham Castle. Antechamber.
(After much cheering and celebration in the courtyard, many of the villagers start to make their way back to their homes. Upon climbing the steps back into the castle, Carter’s lifeless body was discovered. Taken to a small antechamber to the left of the Great Hall, Robin and King Richard stand over the fallen man.)
King Richard: “He was a fine soldier. He did his country and his brother proud.”
Robin: (Shaking his head:) “Your majesty, this was not part of the battle. I saw Carter alive moments before you arrived. This was murder.”
King Richard: “Murder? I thought you said all of the enemy were neutralised.”
Robin: “I believed they were, Sire. But someone must’ve-”
(Stopping himself, knowing exactly who is responsible.)
King Richard: “What is it, Robin. Who could have done this?”
Robin: (With a pained expression, calmly:) “Your majesty, the people in the Great Hall need to see their King. There are brave men and women who are gravely wounded and need their spirits lifted.”
King Richard: (Considers Robin a moment, then nods.) “Make this right, my friend. (Robin nods.) I will see to the wounded.”
(The King places his hand on Carter’s chest, takes a deep breath, then leaves the room.)
The Great Hall.
(Marian walks slowly down the steps towards the makeshift operating theatre that the Great Hall has become. She spots Isabella who is standing motionless outside a curtained off area.)
Marian: (Gently, putting her hand on Isabella’s shoulder:) “Isabella.. (Isabella turns towards Marian, tears brimming her eyes:) Guy?”
Isabella: (Nodding, allowing the tears to fall:) “He’s going to live. (Marian rushes forward and wordlessly hugs her friend.) Djaq’s just sewing him up now. Thank God.”
Marian: (Smiling as her own tears fall:) “No. (Pulling away slightly to look at her:) Thank Djaq.”
(Isabella nods and the two women embrace once more.)
Behind the curtain.
(Meg mops Gisborne’s brow as Djaq continues to stitch his wounds.)

Hallway.
(Robin, Much and Will speak quietly in a corner.)
Robin: “I believe Vaisey is still alive and roaming the castle somewhere. I have to find him and end this once and for all.”
Much: “Right, let’s go.”
Robin: “No, Much. This I do alone.”
Will: “Robin, we’ll come with you. You can’t risk-”
Robin: (Speaking over him:) “I have to do this alone, lads. It has to be this way, just me and him.”
Much: “But Master you don’t know that it’s just him, others could’ve survived.”
Robin: “I don’t think so, I believe this is his last stand. He could have left the castle quietly and unseen if he wanted to, we wouldn’t have known. Killing Carter was his message to me. I have to end him, alone.”
Will: “What do you want us to do?”
Robin: “Make sure everyone stays in the Great Hall and don’t let Marian know what’s happening. (Much and Will nod.) Thank you, my friends.”
(Robin turns and walks along the corridor to face his nemesis as Much and Will share concerned looks.)
The Great Hall.
(Djaq steps out from behind the curtain, wiping blood from her hands with a rag.)
Isabella: (Stepping forward:) “Djaq! Is he..”
Djaq: “He’ll be alright, he needs bed rest and quiet.”
(Djaq turns to go but Isabella stops her.)
Isabella: “Djaq, please. I wanted to thank you for…I know we don’t…I’m sorry for-”
Djaq: (Putting her hand up to interrupt Isabella’s ramblings:) “Meg told me that you saved her life on the battlements. (At Isabella’s look:) For someone who was not aiming, you have remarkable accuracy.”
Isabella: “I’m so sorry, I never meant any of this to happen. I can never repay you for saving Guy’s life. Or Marian’s come to think of it.”
Djaq: (With a small smile:) “Twice.”
Isabella: (Nods, smiling too:) “Twice.”
Djaq: (Taking Isabella’s hands into her own.) “Cherish your brother, Isabella. Forgive him his faults and failings. A brothers’ love is…”
(Djaq stops, unable to finish, her thoughts turning to her own brother, whose name she has taken in tribute.)
Isabella: “A brothers’ love. (Djaq nods.) Thank you, Djaq.”
(The women look at each other with understanding as the doors to the Great Hall open. Adjusting their eyes to the sudden brightness, everyone looks up to see the silhouette of a tall man. As he steps into the room people gasp with the realisation that their King has arrived.)

image

Sherwood Forest.
(Little John walks through the trees. He stops, sighs, and looks around. Allan sees him and calls to him.)
Allan: “John! (Little John turns around.) Come on. (Little John starts walking away.) Hey?! John?! (Allan runs to catch him up.) What you doing? I’ve been looking everywhere for you. (Little John walks on silently.) John?”
Little John: “I don’t want company.”
(Allan puts the back of his hand to Little John’s chest.)
Allan: “Hey, come back—”
Little John: “I’m sorry I didn’t believe you earlier. I should have.”
Allan: “Oh, that. Don’t worry about that, mate. It was a bit tense for all of us. (Little John resumes walking.) If that’s what you’re worried about-”
Little John: (Roars:) “I’ve had enough! (Allan stares at him. Little John walks on, and Allan catches him up again.) Leave me be. (Allan stays at his side.) Leave… me… be.”
Allan: “I am!”
Little John: “Then why are you walking beside me?”
Allan: “Maybe we’re going to the same place, eh?”
Little John: (Sneers:) “No, I don’t think so. Your place is with Isabella in the castle. Much is with Eve in Bonchurch. Will & Djaq, Robin and Marian!”
Allan: “Oh, so that’s what this is about. You know you chose to stay and live in the camp, John.”
Little John: “I’m aware of my choices.”
Allan: (Allan stops Little John:) “We need you around, all right? To remind us who it is we’re fighting for here. All right? We’re lost without you.”
Little John: (Sighs, thinking it over:) “The fighting’s over, we won. Leave me alone. I deserve to be alone.”
Allan: “John..”
Little John: “No, Go away! (Walks on. Mutters:) Leave me alone.”
(Allan lets him go, then turns round, wondering what to do next, and goes back the way he came. After a moment, they both hear a donkey braying. Little John frowns then continues towards the camp. As he moves, the sounds of the donkey become louder and are soon accompanied by the voice of a woman.)
Eleanor: “You stubborn ass! You’ve been nothing but trouble the entire time we’ve been together.  Now, move!”
(As John crests the hill he looks down to see the woman and donkey trying to pull a heavily laden cart out of the mud. Shaking his head, Little John heads down the hill to help.)
Little John: (From behind the cart, hidden from view:) “If you start leading the donkey I’ll push from back here.”
Eleanor: (Looking back, startled:) “Oh! Thank you kind Sir. (to donkey:) Come on, Toby, work with me!”
(Eleanor starts pulling the donkey as Little John lifts and pushes the cart at the same time. Soon, thanks to John’s impressive strength, the cart is freed.)
Little John: “Ah! That should do it.”
Eleanor: “Thank you, thank you! However can I repay…(As John stands up and walks toward her.) you. (She considers him for a moment.) John? John Little?”
Little John: (Warily:) “Who’s asking?”
Eleanor: “John! It’s me, Eleanor Large. We grew up together.”
Little John: (Frowns a moment, them his eyes widen:) “Ellie? (Eleanor smiles and walks into a big hug from John.) It’s been so long! How are you?”
Eleanor: “I’m well, I’m well. Coming back to Nottingham to stay with family after my husband..” (She looks down, sadly.)
Little John: (Sympathetically:) “I’m sorry.”
Eleanor: “No, no. (Lifting her head:) He lived a good life. How about you, hows Alice?”
Little John: (Looks away.) “She’s gone. Things..I..”
Eleanor: “Oh well, never mind eh? (Claps her hands together:) I have to give you your reward!”
Little John: “Don’t be silly, it was nothing.”
Eleanor: “Now now, (Looking through her belongings.) I’m sure I can find you something.”
Little John: “That’s not necessary, please.”
Eleanor: “Ah-ha! Perfect. (Eleanor pulls out a long piece of material and walks toward John. She reaches up and wraps it around his neck.) Lovely!”
Little John: (Looks down and touches the scarf. He looks up and tousles his hair:) “Is it me?” (Eleanor laughs and John joins her.)
Eleanor: “So what are you up to at the moment?”
Little John: “Oh, I was just…headed home.”
Eleanor: “Well if you’re not too busy, maybe you could walk with me the rest of the way? It’s been so long since I’ve seen a friendly face.”
(Little John hesitates only the merest of moments before deciding.)
Little John: “Of course, I’d like that.”
(Eleanor smiles up at him and nods. She walks over to the mule and begins to tug on one of his leads. John walks to the other side of the animal and takes the other. The pair make their way slowly towards Nottingham, talking and laughing all the way.)

Nottingham Castle. Outside The Sheriff’s Quarters.
(Robin walks cautiously along the corridor, his sword drawn and ready for anything. As he approaches the Sheriff’s Quarters, Vaisey appears from behind a pillar.)
Sheriff: (Leaning casually:) “Oh good, you got my message.”
Robin: “Give it up, Vaisey. You’re out of options.”
Sheriff: “On the contrary dear boy. I have precisely one card left to play.”
Robin: (Looking around:) “Yeah? And what’s that?”
Sheriff: (Spreading his arms wide:) “This of course. How I always knew it would end. You and me. Might vs Right, the lightness against the darkness. The final battle between good and evil.” (Vaisey draws his sword.)
Robin: (Smiling, walking over to a torch and hanging his bow on the sconce:) “You want to fight me to the death, no tricks?”
Sheriff: “No tricks. Just you and me and my…(the Sheriff pulls a dagger from behind his back and hurls it. Robin deftly catches it, looks to Vaisey and throws the blade away.) En garde!”
Robin: ‘Thanks for the warning.“
(The Sheriff lashes out at Robin, and they begin a ferocious sword fight. They work their way from Vaisey’s former quarters and into the hallway. The Sheriff kicks Robin, and Robin drops to a knee. Robin blocks an overhead strike and pushes Vaisey away from him. Robin swings his sword at the Sheriff; the Sheriff retreats. The Sheriff ducks behind a pillar and the sword hits it. The Sheriff stabs at Robin; Robin ducks aside. The Sheriff swings and Robin ducks. The Sheriff holds it overhead and Robin grabs his arm, then elbows him in the head. A punch to the face disarms Vaisey and sends him down. Robin grits his teeth stands over him, holding the point of his sword down.)
Robin: “This is for all the lives you’ve ruined…for all the people you’ve killed.”
Sheriff: “Now, Hood…”
(Robin changes his grip on his sword and holds it over the Sheriff. Robin hesitates as he looks down at the pathetic, beaten man beneath him. Slowly he withdraws his sword.)
Robin: ”No. Killing you now would be too easy, too quick for a man like you.“
(Robin turns and walks back towards his bow. The Sheriff, getting his feet underneath him, slides along the floor and pushes himself up using a pillar.)
Sheriff: (Warily, smiling:) "You’re not going to kill me?”
Robin: (Grabbing his bow:) “Not without a trial and certainly not by depriving the people of Nottingham of the sight of your humiliation.”
Sheriff: “Ah.”
Robin: (Waving him over to walk back towards the Great Hall:) “Come along, Vaisey. The King, I’m sure, would love to speak with you.”
Sheriff: (Raising his eyebrows then smiles:) “You know, I do believe you’re right, Hood. It would be a crime for me not to receive a trial, to escape true justice.”
Robin: “I’m glad we agree, now come on.”

image

Sheriff: “Yes, a man of my greatness deserves a trial to be seen by as many people as possible. Perhaps I can convince Prince John to be my character witness? Yes, perhaps the Prince will persuade his brother to curtail my execution into a simple banishment. Hm? I hear Kingsbridge is looking for a new Sheriff. What do you think, Hood? (Robin glares at Vaisey, already beginning to regret his decision.) You know what’s surprising, Robin? The fact that after everything, after all the lives I’ve taken, all the pain I’ve caused, you have not even maimed me. (Smirks and walks towards Robin.) Surely I deserve at least that, hm? (Robin frowns, remembering when these words were first spoken in a conversation that feels so long ago.) Remember those three arrows, Robin? The three arrows you could not bring yourself to sink deep into my skull? (The sheriff chuckles:) Oh such good times, Hood! And the question still remains the same.”
Robin: “And what’s that?”
Sheriff: “That even after I stabbed the woman you love, perhaps you secretly know that I’m right?”
(At the mention of Marian’s name, Robin’s thoughts clear. He reaches over his shoulder and draws out an arrow, nocking it as he speaks.)
Robin: “There was a moment just now where I actually felt sorry for you, Vaisey. Thank you for reminding me just how vile…(Robin draws the arrow back and releases it, quickly pulling another from his quiver.)…loathsome…(A second arrow hits its mark.)…and evil you are.”
(Drawing a third arrow and letting it fly. The Sheriff stands stock still, eyes wide in astonishment. Vaisey looks down at the three arrows now protruding from his chest. The Sheriff looks up again at Robin, his mouth moving as if to say something, and then falls heavily onto his back. Picking up his sword and re-sheathing it, Robin walks slowly towards the Sheriff. Grabbing a torch from the wall he leans down and brings the light close to Vaisey’s face. Upon checking for any signs of life he finds none. Breathing a sigh of relief, Robin collapses into a seated position beside the dead man. The fight now, finally, over.)

When A Plan Comes Together (pt.12)

image

Nottingham Castle. Poolside.
(Allan and Little John are positioning their barrels on opposite corners of the large swimming pool. Marian and a reluctant Isabella do the same with their own barrels.)
Isabella: “Are you sure we can’t do this another way? Maybe we could-”
Marian: “It has to be done, Isabella. This is the only way we can stop Vaisey’s army without destroying the rest of the castle and everyone in it.”
Isabella: (Looking ruefully around the room.) “I designed this room myself. It’s utterly flawless. (Sighs:) How long do I have?”
Marian: (Speaking loud enough for Allan and John to hear:) “When the second explosion happens, that’s our signal to light our barrels.”
Allan: (Turning to Little John:) "Are we really going to blow it all up? (Little John makes a face and shrugs. Rubbing his hands together:) Should make one hell of a bang!”

image

Outside Nottingham. Graveyard.
(Much is muttering and complaining to Will as he climbs down the graveyard entrance to the tunnel.)
Much: “Why is it always me? I’m always the decoy.”
Will: “Because after you embarrassed him by saving Marian, there’s no doubt the Sheriff will be after your blood.”
Much: (Stares at Will a moment, then throws his arms up, exasperated:) “Honestly, no good deed.”
Will: “Shh, they’re coming. Get down there.”
(Much nods and heads down the hole into the tunnel as Will takes his position behind a tree, hidden from sight.)
Sheriff: (Approaching the tunnel entrance:) “Pick up your feet. I want the castle back in my possession before the King arrives.”
(Much, playing the fool, pops his head out of the hole and looks around as if terrified.)
Much: “You? I-I..I thought you’d retreated!”
Sheriff: “Me? The Sheriff of Nottingham retreat? Never!”
Much: (As the Sheriff and his men step forward:) “Don’t come any closer! There are more of me..I mean us! Hundreds of us all down here waiting to kill you all!”
Sheriff: (Rolling his eyes:) “He’s bluffing, he’s alone.”
Blamire: (to soldiers:) “Kill him.”
Much: “Oh!”
(Much drops back down the hole as the Sheriff smiles.)
Sheriff: “Come along men, time to hunt. And it’s rabbit season.”
(He sneers and leads the way into the tunnel after Much. One by one the soldiers step down into the tunnel as Blamire stays behind.)
Will: (From his hidden position:) “Come on, go down into the tunnel you git.”
(As the last soldier disappears, Blamire looks around unsure of something, then finally enters the tunnel.)

image

Tunnel.
(Much runs ahead, looking behind him to make sure he’s being followed as the Sheriff leads his men down the tunnel.)
Graveyard.
(Will steps out from his hiding place, bow and arrow in hand. He walks to the tunnel entrance, pulls out a flint from his pocket and kneels.)
Tunnel.
(Much has slowed his pace to a hurried walk, glancing over his shoulder as the soldier march towards him.)
Graveyard.
(Will manages to start a small fire with his flint and some dried grass. Standing, he ignites the tip of his arrow and nocks it do his bow.)
Will: (Taking a deep breath:) “Gotcha.”
Tunnel.
(Much stands wide eyed on the spot trying to see into the darkness as The Sheriff and his men catch up to him.)
Sheriff: “Nowhere left to run, little rabbit?”
(Much’s response is cut off as an almighty explosion is heard at the far end of the tunnel. The soldiers make various distressed noises as they are showered with rocks and dirt.)
Soldier: “They’ve sealed the entrance, there’s no way out!”
Sheriff: (As the soldiers murmur:) “Shut up, shut up! We don’t need a way out. (Points at Much:) Forward!”
Robin: (Walking into the tunnel, flaming arrow nocked, bow drawn:) “Not so fast, Vaisey.”
Sheriff: “Hood!”
(Much walks backwards to get behind Robin.)
Robin: “This is your last chance, Blamire. Tell your men to throw down their weapons and surrender or I shall entomb you all beneath this castle forever.”
Blamire: (to Sheriff:) “My lord..”
Sheriff: (to Robin:) “Blamire does not control this army, I do! And I will not be dictated to by outlaws. (to soldiers:) All of you, forward now!”

image

Robin: “Much, get ready to run.”
Blamire: “My lord I don’t think-”
Sheriff: “You are not paid to think at all. Now do as I say.”
Robin:
(Chuckling:) “Bad decision. Much, run. (Much, not needing to be told
twice runs back towards the Great Hall entrance. backing up as the army
approaches.)
I hope you enjoy your time together!”
(Robin shoots his
arrow at a small barrel of Byzantine fire and runs for the exit. There
is an explosion and several support columns collapse closing off the
Great Hall entrance. More dust and dirt falls on the soldiers heads.)
Sheriff:
(Fanning the smoke out of his face, smirking:) “Oh, Hood. (Yelling to
thin air:)
You are pathetic, was that your big plan?”
Blamire: (Coughing:) “My lord, we are trapped.”
Sheriff: “This is nothing, organise the men, start clearing the debris.”
Blamire: (to Soldiers:) “Alright get organised, lets clear this mess.”
(The
Sheriff wanders over to another part of the tunnel. Reaching around in
the darkness, his hands find the handle to the cellar door exit. He
turns it and the door opens. Just as he is about to shout back to the
men four more explosions are heard overhead. With a horrible creaking
sound the ceiling above them starts to crumble.)
Blamire: (Squinting into the darkness:) “My lord!”
Sheriff: “Sorry, Blamire.”
(The
Sheriff ducks inside the door, pulling it firmly behind him and bolting
it shut. Blamire opens his mouth to yell as the ceiling collapses on top
of the army and gallons of water floods the room.)

Courtyard.
(Robin exits through the main castle doors and walks down the steps.)
Marian: “Robin!”
(Marian runs down from a side corridor to meet him and they kiss deeply. He spins her around and places her back on the ground.)
Robin: “That, my love, was brilliant!”
(Marian smiles brightly and they embrace again. Much and Little John join them in the courtyard.)
Much: “Is it true? Is it really over?”
(Smiling, Robin separates from Marian and walks over to Much.)
Robin: “Yes, the final battle.”
Much: “I can’t believe it.”
Robin: “Believe it my friend…and you are my best friend.”
(Robin gives Much a long embrace and Much can’t hold back the tears any longer. Robin pulls himself away and turns to Little John.)
Robin: “Today was a good day to die.”
Little John: “For the Sheriff.”
(They both laugh and share a hug.)
Robin: “We need to clear away the barricades and open up the castle to the people of Nottingham.”

Marian: “Robin, look!”
(Robin turns to Marian who is pointing out towards the town. An army approaches lead by a man riding a horse with 3 lions on his chest. It is King Richard, finally returned home. Robin and Marian share a look and break into huge smiles as they run towards the portcullis.)
King Richard: “Robin of Locksley, is that you?”
Robin: (Cheekily:) “Nice of you to join us, your majesty.”
King Richard: “My apologies my boy, I fear we are too late for the battle.”
Marian: “True, but your Majesty can help us win the war at home.”
King Richard: “Milady, I have returned to do just that.”
(Robin turns to Much and Little John.)
Robin: “Go and get some help to clear the way for the King.”
(Much nods and heads up the steps into the castle. Little John stares at the King awhile longer then begins clearing the defences.)
King Richard: (Looking around:) “It looks to have been an almighty struggle.”
Robin: “Thank the people of Nottingham, Sire. We all came together to fight for a free and proud England.”
King Richard: “Then I am truly in their debt, and yours.”
Castle Corridor.
(Much has rallied the people who file out to help with the clearance and to see Richard return. Carter stands by the door, motioning for his men to go and greet the King. As the last man passes, Carter puts his hands on his hips and sighs deeply, closing his eyes for a moment, relieved that the fight is over. Suddenly a hand is put over his mouth and his eyes widen. Wet slicing noises are heard as Carter is stabbed repeatedly from behind. As he slumps to the ground, dead we see the Sheriff standing with his bloody dagger in hand.)
Sheriff: (Sneering:) “This is over when I say it is.”
(Vaisey looks out into the courtyard at the joyous gathering then turns and heads quickly along a corridor, deeper into the castle.)

Nottingham Castle. The Great Hall.
(Djaq is standing on a large barrel. She gives Marian a small one.)
Djaq: “Fill it. Fill it, please. (Djaq hops to another barrel.) Robin! (Robin comes over. Djaq kneels down to him.) Robin, if we use this much Byzantine fire, we’ll destroy everything. (Marian turns back with the pitcher.) The castle, the Sheriff’s army—”
Marian: (Interrupting:) “And with it, we’ll kill every man, woman and child in here.”
(Allan runs in from an internal side entrance.)
Allan: (Breathlessly:) “Robin! The tunnel! Isabella reckons the Sheriff’s just cleared it.”
(Little John calls out from the balcony where he, Much, Will and several archers stand ready.)
Little John: “Robin! They’re coming!”
Robin: “John, hold them out! (Runs to Allan.) Marian, you’re in charge.”
Marian: “John, hold the doors!”
Tunnel.
(Gisborne walks through drifts of dust and limestone pebbles on the floor.)
Isabella: “Guy!”
Gisborne: (Spinning around to face her:) “Isabella? What are you doing down here?”
Isabella: “I heard the explosion, I knew it came from underneath the castle.”
Gisborne: “How do you know about the tunnel?”
Isabella: “My workmen discovered it while they were renovating the pool. (Holding out her hand and catching a droplet of water.) This tunnel runs right beneath it. I added an entrance via the cellar and I came in that way.”

image

Gisborne: "Why didn’t you tell me you knew?”
Isabella: (Looking at him accusingly:) “Because I saw the bodies, Guy. They were the workers who dug the tunnel, I assume? (Gisborne nods, a pained expression on his face.) So I covered it up. I knew that I couldn’t just leave a huge tunnel into the castle wide open. So I had my workers install a little booby trap for anyone who wanted to use it.”
Gisborne: “I almost died in that trap.”
Isabella: (Tenderly:) “It was never meant for you, my brother.”
(The Sheriff comes up behind Gisborne.)
Sheriff: “Hmm, I wonder. Was it meant for me? (Gisborne whips his head around to look and raises his sword at the Sheriff as Vaisey walks closer.) Isabella, you will, of course, relinquish your claims to my title, if… you wish to join me.”
Gisborne: (Turns to Isabella.) “You planned this?”
(Isabella shakes her head as the Sheriff chuckles.)
Sheriff: “No, no. I didn’t want anyone else to have the pleasure of killing you, so I set up this little trap. I merely offered Isabella one last chance to join the winning team. (Looks to Isabella:) In the name of friendship.”
Isabella: (Snarling at Vaisey:) “Our friendship ended the moment you stabbed Marian, you bastard.”
(Blamire steps forward and draws. Isabella brings out her dagger.)
Sheriff: “Enough! Blamire, you will have your revenge for your brother only after I have dealt with Gisborne. She can watch as I kill her brother. Now, stay back. (Gisborne takes small retreating steps.) He’s mine. (Draws.) The man who betrayed me. I made you!”
(The Sheriff immediately attacks. Gisborne blocks and punches him as Isabella darts behind a pillar.)
Gisborne: “I should’ve killed you when I had the chance. I won’t make the same mistake twice.”

(The Sheriff and Gisborne fight. Gisborne has the Sheriff on his knees.
The Sheriff holds up the sword with both hands, blocking Gisborne’s
repeated blows. Blamire points to
the side, directing two soldiers as they move Gisborne is distracted. The
Sheriff sees the advantage and slices Gisborne’s arm. The Sheriff attacks again as Robin
arrives and grabs Isabella’s arm.)
Robin: (Hissing:) “If you won’t join the fight, get out of the way.”
(Robin turns and draws as the soldiers charge him. Robin pushes one
aside. The Sheriff kicks the back of Gisborne’s knee. Gisborne fights to keep
his balance. The Sheriff is about to stab him when Allan charges the Sheriff.)
Allan: “Guy!”
(The Sheriff turns to Allan, who fights with a sword in each hand. Blamire renews the attack on Gisborne. Robin fights the two soldiers. Allan kicks the Sheriff. Gisborne bests Blamire and kicks him back. Allan spins and kicks back the Sheriff. Robin fights off the soldiers. Robin, Allan and Gisborne retreat to the right side of the tunnel, each under an arch. The soldiers and Blamire regroup. Robin draws his knife and holds it out with his sword. The Sheriff steps between the pillars in front of Allan as Blamire faces Gisborne. All have their weapons outstretched in front of them.)
Sheriff: “How appropriate. A battle so huge should come down to the important few.”
(Gisborne, Allan and Robin stand ready. Robin looks sideways at Allan and Gisborne and nods.)
Robin: “Together.”
Allan: “Bring it on.”
(The Sheriff attacks Robin, Blamire attacks Gisborne, and the soldiers attack Allan. Robin blocks the Sheriff ’s blow and twists under his arm, away from the wall as Allan drop-kicks one of the soldiers. Gisborne also makes a twisting move against Blamire, moving away from the wall. Allan quickly dispatches the remaining soldier and faces Blamire. Gisborne knocks down a soldier. Meanwhile Blamire punches Allan’s face, causing Allan to drop his sword, then Blamire kicks Allan in the chest, kicking away Allan’s remaining sword at the same time. Allan falls on his back, then rolls himself to his feet again. Gisborne sees he’s defenceless.)
Gisborne: “Allan!”

image

(Gisborne tosses his sword to Allan. The Sheriff swings at Robin, who
blocks. Robin swings and the Sheriff ducks and sees Gisborne is
unarmed. The Sheriff stands up and stabs Gisborne with all his might.)
Isabella: (Steps forward:) “Guy!”
(The Sheriff pulls out his sword. Gisborne grimaces.)
Robin: “Gisborne! (Gisborne
falls on his side towards Robin. Allan, having knocked out Blamire,
steps over and kneels at Gisborne’s side. The Sheriff turns and sees
Blamire on the floor. Gisborne tries to stand, but falls again. Robin
brandishes his sword at the Sheriff.)
This ends… here!”
(Allan guards Gisborne from the Sheriff. Isabella points her dagger at Vaisey.)
Isabella: (Eyes wide, tears forming, advancing on the Sheriff:) “Come back here and face me, you coward!”
Sheriff: (Ecstatic:) “Oh, this is too good to be true. Ah! Oh, we’ll be back… (He kicks Blamire, who awakens, wide eyed. He looks around to see Robin step forward with his sword up. The Sheriff drags Blamire up to his feet.) to finish the rest of you off with an army.”
(The Sheriff and Blamire turn and head down the tunnel. Gisborne groans. Allan turns him onto his back and Robin drops his sword and kneels at his side.)
Gisborne: (Huskily to Robin:) “Clear the people out… through the cellar… backs onto this tunnel. The Sheriff will take his men the easy route through the Great Hall.”
Allan: “Shh, Guy you’ll be alright, we’re not leaving you mate.”
(Isabella slowly, shakily kneels next to Allan beside Gisborne.)
Robin: (Nods to Allan.) “Get word to Djaq to prepare her instruments. (Jerks his head towards the castle entrance.) Go on.”
(Allan gets up and runs towards the castle. Gisborne turns to Isabella and reaches for her hand)
Gisborne: (Earnestly:) “Sister… (Isabella smiles at him sadly. Gisborne’s head falls back with a groan. Isabella cradles his head. Gisborne’s eyes swim. to Robin.) Is this the end?”
Robin: “Not today, my friend.”
Isabella: “As Sheriff, I won’t allow you to die.”
Gisborne: “I don’t think you’re Sheriff any more.”
Isabella: (Smiles:) “Well as your sister I won’t allow it either.”

image

Much: (From the tunnel entrance:) “Robin!”
(Robin stands as Much and Little John run towards them.)
Robin: “Quick, help us carry Gisborne back into the castle, we need to get him to Djaq!”
Isabella: “Hang on, brother. Hang on.”
The Great Hall
(Gisborne is carried between Robin, Isabella, Much and Little John towards a large table. Djaq is stood waiting anxiously with Meg who runs to Gisborne as he is placed on the table.)
Gisborne: "Meg, I’m sorry.”
Meg: (Shaking her head:) “No, you’re going to be alright, I know it.”
(Djaq begins cutting away Gisborne’s clothing, trying to get a better look at the damage. Will pulls Robin aside.)
Will: “Robin, it was amazing, they were pounding on the doors and then they just stopped. Carter and his men have reclaimed the courtyard. The Sheriff’s men have retreated!”
Robin: (Determinedly:) “No, this isn’t over. They’re regrouping and headed for the tunnel. We have no way to defend it. (Standing and speaking to the group as a whole:) We need to start evacuating. (Shouting impatiently:) Get these people out!”

image

Djaq: (Calmly, while tending to Gisborne:) “Robin, look around you. These people are gravely injured, they cannot be moved. And Gisborne? (Djaq looks up to see Meg tenderly stroke Gisborne’s face and kiss him lovingly on the temple.) I need to operate right away.”
Robin: (Frustratedly:) “We are running out of time and options here!”
(The gang stand around mutely, watching Djaq prepare to operate on Gisborne as Robin paces, trying to think. Marian glances at Isabella.)
Marian: “Why are you wet?”
Isabella: “Hm? (Dazedly:) Oh, I think my swimming pool is leaking, it runs directly above the tunnel.”
Marian: (Eyes widening:) “That’s it! (Turns to the others:) Much, John, Will, Allan I want you to each grab a small barrel of Djaq’s concoction and follow me. (The gang look to Robin who nods and they all fetch some of the smaller barrels. Marian walks over to Isabella who is staring silently at her brother lying on the table. Taking her hand gently, Marian coaxes Isabella into action. softly:) Come on, let Djaq work her magic. We need your help to save us all.”
(Tugging gently on her hand, Isabella nods and allows herself to be lead by Marian out of the Great Hall.)
